Toddler Sleep: A whole new ballgame

Are you one of the many parents whose baby slept well (maybe with some sleep coaching, maybe without), only for things to go completely sideways out of nowhere when they hit 2 or 3 years old? One minute you’re feeling like you’ve cracked this whole sleep thing, and the next, bedtime has turned into a marathon, night wakings are back, and you’re questioning everything. Sound familiar? You’re not alone!
This is something so many parents experience, and it can feel totally baffling. The thing is, baby sleep and toddler sleep are two very different things. As they grow, sleep becomes just as much about emotions as it is about physical needs – making sure they’re comfortable, well fed and not overtired sometimes isn’t enough!
Toddlers are figuring out their independence, experiencing big (BIG) feelings they don’t always understand, and going through huge changes in their little worlds. Maybe they’ve started nursery, moved up to a new room, had a new sibling arrive or you’ve moved house. We can’t tell you how many 1:1 consultations we’ve had that start with “They slept really well until we went on holiday, and sleep has never really been good since…”
Oh, and let’s not forget that at these ages, their number one priority is feeling connected to you, so if they sense any distance, they’ll often try to bridge the gap at bedtime or in the middle of the night.
That’s why sleep at this age can feel so unpredictable. It’s not just about awake windows or routines anymore—it’s about big emotions, feeling secure, connected and like they have some control in their lives, and when their world shifts…sleep often does too.
The good news? It’s normal, and it absolutely doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Toddler sleep challenges are just another stage of their development, and with the right balance of boundaries and connection, you can get things back on track. If you’re feeling a little lost with it all, our Toddler Sleep Course is a good place to start or, if you’d like a more personalised approach, a 1:1 consultation will give you a plan to put into place for your family.
